Old Age

How do you view old age? Two different views are explored by different poets. Describe the view of old age as portrayed in "Old Man Old Man" by UA Fanthorpe and "Warning" by Jenny Joseph, and show how the poets convey their different viewpoints. Use examples from the texts to support your statements.

Show clearly which poem you identify with more and why.

  1. The poem 'Old Man, Old Man' by UA Fanthrope and the poem 'Warning' by Jenny Joseph both express different views on old age.

With the comment "obdurate in your contracted world" Fanthrope clearly states that old age is a burden, something that is to be dreaded, a time when your body fails you."Living in almost dark" indicates that he is losing his sight, and "As you forget" hints that he is slowly losing his memory.
Joseph, however, thinks the opposite, old age is something to look forward to, a time where you can let yourself go and make up for the sobriety of your youth.
    to be continued....

  2. E.H you have supported your statements and interpretations of the author's feelings with evidence from the text. Remember all direct quotes require quotation marks. I look forward to reading the continuation of this comment
